the week of the dog
while the parents were in florida, the dog stayed with me. now she was somewhere else last weekend, another family's house, as i was in LA. but tuesday night i picked her up, and tonight i took her back to my parents.
she is not used to the condo lifestyle. the neighbor in the unit down the hall makes a sudden sound, she is ready to run out the door to investigate (bark/growl). outside she is distracted by cars passing, someone sneezing (sleeping with an open window), squirrels and birds, people, and most of all, other dogs.
at the house she has the freedom to go outside off leash in her nice fenced in area off the patio. here she must be on a leash. i know some neighbors let their small dogs wander free, but its for her own safety. and of course there is the leash law. you cant just stumble from sleeping on the sofa to the back door and let her out at 2am. no, if she wants out at 2am here, you must put on your glasses, put on her leash, take a baggie just in case, go out the door, down a few steps and a little hall, then out through the front door. and then you hope she pees quick before she's distracted by something else (and maybe starts to bark).
she's better about eating what's on her dish here. only once or twice did she not clean her plate, and that's cause i was eating something she'd rather have. we only got into 'trouble' once, this morning, and at least it was the bed/sheets and not the carpet (which happened last time she was visiting).
she doesn't get many 'treats' and snacks here, except the occasional piece of string cheese...this time a cheddar cheese stick. and i think the two biscuit halves that she buried she unburied and ate them. otherwise they'll be turning up here and there over the next few weeks, and on her next visit she'd be crying and looking for them when they weren't where she left them.
