double stamp tuesdays
It just occurred to me that I missed double-stamp Tuesdays at Rita's Water Ice. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a big deal. I don't think I've even been to Rita's in two weeks, and the l ast time I went on a Tuesday, that particular franchise didn't participate in the double-stamps. Most summers I misplace my stamp-cards and never get them redeemed. However this summer I have already earned a free product. Of course that card might have been leftover from last summer.
Perhaps I should promote local ice cream eateries instead of chains. One of the local Rita's was once a local ice cream shop. It's on the site of the old Silverside Dairy, where we used to get ice cream and water ice as kids. Sweet Lucy's is one of my favorites. However I recently discovered that my favorite flavor, Cotton Candy, isn't even from the local dairy that they use. It's a Hershey's flavor. I was rather shocked at this discovery, although I'm sure there was some fine print somewhere that pointed out not all their flavors came from the local dairy.
Lickety Split is another local spot....well, it was. It's new name is one I cannot recall, and long gone are the variety of frozen treats and popsicles, the hand-scooped flavors, and other specialties that stood out in my childhood. It's now a soft-serve establishment where they add flavorings to their basic ice cream. This does mean a large variety of flavors. It also means you cannot get a large sundae with both vanilla and banana. I'm not really sure why they can't create the banana, and then throw some vanilla on top. It's not much different than having two small cups of separate flavors and mixing them together.
Charcoal Pit (aka "The Charcoaled Pig") is another ice cream spot, but since they are there year round, I tend not to consider them when seeking out summer dessert. I can always go there mid January and order a milkshake with my grilled cheese sandwich.
